Day 7: Shaimoom’s Home Game

I never would’ve thought my first losing session of this summer challenge would come at a home game. As usual, I was wrong.

Yesterday after work my boy Viet and I headed to a home cash game out in the valley. There were a few funny things about the situation. First of all, I didn’t even know the guy that was hosting the game, nor did I know any of the people playing in it. To make a long story short, I replied to one of his posts on the 2plus2 poker forums and he started reading my blog and it turns out he also plays at Hollywood Park. He’s a real cool guy and I had been trying to make it to one of his home games but couldn’t until last night. He’s told me that the action is great and the players aren’t so I’ve been eager to get out there to see what it was looking like.

I invited my guy Viet to go with me and I was a little worried about him losing. Not because he’s not a good player, but I would just have felt bad if I invited him to play at a complete stranger’s house and he ended up losing his ass off. Well, Viet booked a profit and I was the one that lost my ass off. I was card-dead the whole night and I felt like the Atlantic City tourists in the movie Rounders. My chips were going in the pot and the pots were not coming back. The entire night I only managed to win only three hands at showdown and two of those were for miniscule pots of like $25.

The end result: -$482.

The problem I have with home games is that for some reason I just don’t get focused and I end up just dumping chips. I’m not sure what it is, but I don’t have the same drive or determination to hold onto my chips and build the stack. Obviously I want to win, but I find myself all-in with a hand like 5-7 off-suit on the button when the flop comes 4-6-7 with two spades. Or committing all my chips with Ace-10 when the ace hits the flop. Yuck.

But the bottom line is that it was fun and I met some cool people. The players were actually better than I expected and I was sandwiched between two tight players, Steady Steve and Little Brother (have no idea what his name is but he was there with his bro). Steady Steve played pretty tight and seemed to be high off his ass but I’m thinking that might just be his demeanor. He was definitely a cool guy and was telling me about his professional paint ball career and how he loves to sneak up behind someone and let off 20 shots per second right behind their ear where there’s no protection. I made sure to be friendly with Steady Steve.

I’m 100% positive that the guys that didn’t know me (everyone there except Viet and Shaimoom) viewed me as the fish in the game and that was really fine with me, but my cards never improved the whole night. I tried to push Shaimoom off of a big re-raise pre-flop when I had 1010 but he made a good call with QQ. He was trying to get a read on me and I actually tried to do the fake “I’m gonna try and look like I’m nervous so you call” thing but he read it better than that and called. I think if I went to this game on a regular basis I would make money (I'm pretty sure that Shaimoom and his brother are the only two people that would even consider laying down queens pre-flop). I considered putting more money into the table but the way my cards were running combined with my lack of focus was a sign to quit. The players are good but a few of them have some leaks, I just couldn’t take advantage of them last night.

Here's a picture of the table, Shaimoom is with the glasses:
