I'm not really sure what happened in 2007 or where it went, but looking back, it was quite a year.
I'd like to take this opportunity to revisit 10 key events of '07 that I either caused, witnessed, or had a large interest in (in no particular order):
1. Telling my 30-year-old sister (who is a grad of Harvard and M.I.T.) what M.I.L.F. means: This was a lot of fun and she was extremely disgusted to find out that such a term has become a commonly used word in our society. This is just another indication of how far we have come under the Bush Administration.
2. Mike Vick goes to jail for killing dogs: This is another sign of how far we have progressed as a society. Ray Lewis participated in a murder? White America doesn't care. Priests raping little kids? Let's give it a headline for two days. Thousands of innocent civilians getting murdered on a monthly basis in the Middle East? Eh, they are all terrorists anyways. Mike Vick kills some dogs and fights them? MAY HE BURN IN HELL!! Was he wrong? Yes. Did he deserve to be deemed as the second coming of Satan? In my own humble opinion, no. But we live and learn. And I can't say I wasn't a Clifford fan as a youngster.
3. My best poker year: This year started off horribly. I lost about $3k in poker in January and at the same time was hit hard by a creditor, forcing me to have to borrow a lot of money from a few people. Somehow poker helped me pull myself out of the hole and I had (by far) my best year on the felt. Actually, I've been playing for about three years and the last two years have been profitable. I can also say that I'm more than happy to have black jack (aka this shit is like crack with no high) in my rear view mirror.
4. The war in Iraq: At this point can we really blame Bush anymore? Yes. However, I have to say that I'm thoroughly disappointed in the public's passive attitude towards this war. We are in Iraq for absolutely no reason (at least no reason that is beneficial to the American public) and we have lost thousands of American soldiers, not to mention killed exponentially more Iraqi civilians. Bush takes heat for the war but he doesn't take very much. Organized rallies and demonstrations are far and few between and there is no good solution for this problem. Most (99%) Americans are the same as me: we complain about Bush and say the war is stupid, yet we go to sleep at night with a smile on our face and don't do anything about it. Oh how I miss the 60's. Actually I wasn't there but it must've been better than this.
5. Boston sports: Is this fair? The Mariners have never been to the World Series, the last time the Sonics won was in '79 and the only time the Seahawks made the Superbowl we got anally probed by the NFL refs. So what is a Seattle fan like me supposed to do when the Red Sox win the World Series, the Patriots go undefeated for the first time in the history of the NFL (16 games) and the Boston Celtics have the best record in the NBA after blowing chunks last season? The only legitimate answer is for me to change outfits and hop right on that bandwagon. Yes, on Saturday night I found myself cheering for Tom, Randy, Bill and the rest of the Pats. When Randy dropped that pass I yelled in disappointment and five minutes laters I was running laps around my living room high-fiving my poster of Jamal Crawford. Go Celts.
6. The growing problem of global warming: I didn't watch any of the movies and neither did you. Good luck to our grand children.
7. Poker on the net gets banned: They passed the bill that banned poker on the internet in the U.S. According to the internet forums, this made poker on the net much tougher. However, prior to the new bill I had lost probably about $500 on the net. After the bill I'm up $2950 and had no problem withdrawing the money and cashing the check... in the U.S. So what did the bill do? I have no clue.
8. Superman that ho: LOL. Pure genious. I've started writing my own hit, "The Finger Train" to be released summer '08.
9. I signed up for Facebook: Everyone told me to sign up so I did. And in a strange twist of fate, my Facebook friends list is nearly identical to my Myspace friends list. Is it suprising at all that the exact same people who are on Myspace all the time are on Facebook? No. The difference is.... I don't know, but I give the nod to Myspace.
10. I started the backdoorstraight blog: When I first started the blog, some random FCP'er said he didn't think I could keep it up on a daily basis. Obviously since I'm coming off my most lackluster week of blogging, this is bad timing but I did manage to keep the blog going despite some sorry entries and what not (like this one? lol). During the blog I've had a lot of high's and low's like making $10k, getting in the worst car crash of my life, getting the worst spook of my life and... well I'm not sure what else, but I've written about a lot of shit along the way. So we will head into our second calendar year with an extensive expansion of the blog. If you haven't noticed, there are now several links to the crookedstraight blogs on the right side. These links include: Trek Speaks (Trek Life is a very established MC/DJ in the L.A. area), On The Rocks (Two friends of mine who are excellent writers and even better drinkers), and several other blogs that include sports, shoes, poker news, club reports and other shit like that. Hopefully once the ball gets rolling we'll do big things. If not, fuck it. The 100 or so people that read the backdoor straight can just enjoy more material. Anyways, now is the time to spread the word.
Okay I'm tired of writing and I'm going to go update some of the other blogs so next I will bring you the plans of 08.
Happy New Year everyone, be safe and be sound.
