There's always a point in someone's life when they realize they've gotten old.
I'm not talking about something that happens and you say, "Damn I'm getting old."
I'm talking about one defining moment when you say to yourself "It's official, I'm old."
For some people it means moving in with their significant other. For others it means buying a house or wearing a suit every day. Some people might not be able to stay up past midnight once they turn 30.
My moment happened yesterday.
I went to the movies by myself.
I have friends that have told me they've done this but I've never ventured into this practice. Shit, I remember when I was in high school I didn't even have to pay for movies because the girls would always pay. Actually that was college. See what I mean? It's been one day since I had my "moment" and my memory is already fading.
This is not good.
The worst part is that the movie was so cheap (I spent a grand total of $6.00) that I want to do it again as soon as possible!
Usually when I go with a girl, I spend about $24 on tickets, then another $12 on food (popcorn, two drinks). That's $36. That means for the same price, I can go to SIX movies by myself. Who cares if I'm the only person on the solo tip in the theater. I'm seeing SIX movies to your one movie.
Of course part of the reason the movie was only $6 was because it was at one of those cheap theaters that plays older movies. In this case I went to see "No Country For Old Men," which isn't even that old and was a great movie.
Not to mention that once I realized I was on a date by myself I went ahead and took myself out to dinner. That was very boring though. I was at "Honey's Kettle Fried Chicken" and they had a plasma tv on but with no volume, which was very frustrating considering I had no one to talk to on my date.
The worst part is, I highly recommend going to the movies by yourself. It's a much quicker process. You're in and out of there. You don't have to stay for the credits if you don't want to. You can leave early if the movie sucks and not worry about your net loss on the night.
I'll keep you posted on the second date.
