It's a wrap! Thanks to the bad assed backdoor straight, Jerry Yang is the 2007 World Series of Poker Champion.
I heard rumors on the net throughout the afternoon yesterday that Yang was a donkey who sucked at poker. But anyone that can win over eight million on the strength of a backdoor straight is clearly a poker genius. I can only admire this man for his uncanny ability to mastermind not only the turn, but the river as well. Bravo, Jerry Yang, bravo.
With $8.25 million on the line and a huge mound of cash deposited on the felt, Tuan Lam moved all-in with an ace and queen of diamonds and Yang called with pocket eights.
When a queen, five and nine came on the flop, it looked like Lam, waving a Canadian flag, would be on the verge of a miracle comeback, making a pair of queens for the lead.
But a seven on the turn and a six on the river gave Yang a straight, sealing a win in which he dominated the final table from the moment the nine finalists sat down.
You gotta love the backdoor straight. There is nothing like it. Queen hits the flop for Lam and he starts waving the Canadian flag like a mountie gone wild and then what happens? The almighty backdoor straight punishes him with the might of an iron fist for being so celebratory and cocky. Did this bastard really think that his top pair/top kicker was good when there was a backdoor straight possibility on the board?! Hell no!!
The best part about this is that I had a different backdoor straight story involving Adam Morrison that I was going to tell but it doesn't compare to an 8.25 million dollar victory so I'll save it for another day.
Last night I lost my softball playoff game (although your boy was 3-3 in the cleanup spot) 11-7 and then headed straight to the hollywood pizzark. Got seated at a $200 table while I waited for a $400 seat. Lost $25 on one hand. Sat at a new $400 table and drew the big blind. Lost $10 and got moved to the main game. Semi-tilted when some "nit" re-raised me for the second time in a row (first time I had AQ and called his $100 raise then folded on the flop). I had king/jack of spades and I was like "fuck it, I gamble" and threw in my final $250. I brick and he shows jacks.
So I'm quickly down $435 but I dig deep down in my heart and find the super sauce, the gangster gusto, the killa crown, the Seattle savvy.
It also helped that I had aces vs. queens ("foolio" had queens) and then aces again two hands later. So I go up like $900 on those two hands and then what do I do? I make two horrible, horrible calls. I have pocket tens and some other dude has pocket kings. The board comes jack high and I call him all the way down, dumping like $400 off to him in the process. Next, I have AQ in the big blind. Foolio raises to $25 under the gun. Everyone calls, I call. Flop comes A-10-Q. I check, foolio that raised bets $85, one guy calls and I raise to $200. Raiser calls and now I have him on Ace king. Other guy tanks and folds. Of course the river is a jack. I check and foolio bets $100. The perfect bet to keep me in. River is a jack. Now I know that my hand is just horrible. But I call his $200 bet on the river anyways. Fuck. Now I'm only up like $35 after I was up over $900.
So what do I do?
I dig deep down in my heart and find the super sauce, the gangster gusto, the killa crown, the Seattle savvy.
I get ace/five of hearts in the small blinds. Everyone and they mama limps. So I limp. Flop comes Ac8h9h. I bet $25 knowing that no one will fold for $25. Three callers. Turn is the beautiful seven of hearts. I check. Foolio bets $50, nit calls. I raise to $100 knowing that neither of these guys will fold for a minimum raise. Foolio calls and nit raises to $300. Nit is a tight player so I'm a little concerned that he has the straight flushy. I know he won't fold to me cuz he thinks I'm a wild youngster (and maybe I am) so I go all in for $470 more. Foolio is really thinking about calling, so now I know that he has one end of the straight flush draw, which makes me feel better about nit's holding. Foolio finally folds. Nit does the "count his chips out" thing and finally calls and I take down a monster.
Baddddda biiiiiing!
I feel that this picture is a golden piece of poker photography, seemingly displaying a wild beast protecting my chips, while in reality it is just my t-shirt.
So three hours, +931. I love the $400 no limit.
Not to mention I get home, have to throw some laundry in so I decide to hop on full tilt and also check out the wsop final table on the pirate net channel (shout out to fullcontact). From what I saw, Yang wasn’t that bad. But I placed third in the $33 sit n go and won a few bucks in the six-handed $0.25/0.50 no limit game for a come up of $60. And I got a load of laundry done for the first time in a month. Ay baybay!
